THE THRIFT SHOP

Hours of Operation

Fridays 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

517 Michigan Street

On sunny days, bargains are displayed on the sidewalk in front of the shop on Michigan.
The Thrift Shop is a community resource, providing good used clothing and household effects at very reasonable prices. The shop, managed by volunteers, is open to all, and is stocked by donations from members of the community. Donations of clean useful goods are accepted any weekday morning at the shop.

Sixty percent of revenue goes to the church and forty percent is retained for operating expenses of the shop. In the year 2008, the amount allocated to church operation was in excess of $38,000.

    History of the Thrift Shop

In 1984 the old house, next to the church, at 517 Michigan Street, next to the church was put on the market by its owner. A congregational meeting was called and the church decided to purchase the property.

Work began immediately on cleaning and renovating the new property. As the work was nearing completion, the Management Committee looked for ways in which the building could pay for itself, while providing a service to the community. The idea of a Thrift Shop to serve needy families in Victoria was enthusiastically accepted. Reverend Forsythe cut the ribbon at the official opening on February 1st, 1985.

Ever since its inception, the shop, while fulfilling its mandate to provide inexpensive goods for the community, has been a major fundraiser for church operations. Enthusiasm, and many, many hours of volunteer time have made this possible, and we are indebted to the individuals who have so lovingly and willingly donated their effort and time.

The housewares section is a bustling room, with linens, dishes, small appliances, and home decor.

Repaired and pressed, good used clothing can be purchased for a dollar or two.
