Sarah Deboo - "Volunteer"
The 3-9 May 2003 issue of RadioTimes Magazine (see also www.radiotimes.com) included an interesting event staged for the cast of Cutting It, a British program. I was pleasantly surprised at mention of model Sarah Deboo. I wonder how she fits in to the larger DEBOO scheme of things? -------------------

The Holland Society of New York Here's the really big question: Did one of the descendants of those 16th C emigrants from the Southern (Spanish) Netherlands (please see Belgium Section) who went north to the United Provinces pack bags once more, and this time head to Nieuw Amsterdam/New Netherland (=New York) some time before 1675? Was he/his family the first record for DEBOO (perhaps spelled as de Boog, de Bow, de Boogh) in North America? The resources of The Holland Society of New York might be the best starting point to answer these interesting questions. I guess all we need is an American friend living near New York to accept the challenge. Any volunteers out there? The Society has a good library, a website (www.hollandsociety.com), a keen interest in the early Dutch settler families (yes DeBow is listed), and an historical annual event - the parading of a stuffed beaver - at a dinner celebrating 'the Dutch Nation in New York.' There is additional celebration, presentation of medals, sharing of pride and good cheer, and acknowledgement of 'distinguished achievement' ever since the Society was founded in 1885. It seems to me the social activities, especially the good fellowship, alone are worth membership consideration. Please direct inquiries to hollsoc@aol.com. - RFD
Would you like to see the name DEBOO up in lights at a local museum? A large format 1652 land tenure map showing two Deboo farms in the nearby Fens (see preview in the UK Section) and other good information about Strangers can be found during a visit to the Thorney Museum in Cambridgeshire, England (www.thorney-museum.org.uk). Tours of the Museum and the famous Abbey can be arranged on request. The Museum is staffed by volunteers from the Thorney Society, a group dedicated to preserving the ancient heritage of the area. The Society is looking for members and support for its projects. It sponsors various activities during the year, including walking tours, meetings, lectures, and exhibitions. We, at De Bootje Gazette, strongly recommend membership, and we suggest planning an overnight visit at Thorney (at least) to absorb the Stranger history in this very special village. Contact Dorothy Halfhide (dot.thorney@tesco.net) for details about the Society and about planned events at Thorney and vicinity. - RFD
Fens Symposium at Cambridge, England If you are a DEBOO with roots in England connecting to the 1626 agricultural immigrants from Flanders, or with those in the Thorney Registers, you might want to attend an important symposium slated for 8 December 2003 at the Pippard Lecture Theatre in the Cavendish Laboratory on the Madingly Road. Presentations begin at 0950 hrs, extend to about 1700. Symposium organizer is Mrs Carol Marples at the Scientific Periodicals Library, Bene't Street, Cambridge, England CB2 3PY. The Symposium is sponsored by the Philosophical Society. Tentative Agenda: ·Why the Fens are there

Please note that much of the discussion will focus on the pre-drainage (undisturbed) period. If you are descended from one of the six (or so) Deboo families who came to the Fens as drainage workers and tenant farmers at places like Thorney, Holme, Whittlesey, and Eye, this event will provide essential background information to the early days of settlement. The speakers, including "Mr Fens" himself, Mike Petty, are all experts in their field. It should be a terrific time. -Alan Bullwinkle, Stapleford, Cambridgeshire, UK
A DEBOO Family Reunion We keep asking, but we still don't know: Would you, your family members and other namesakes be interested in a one- or two-day international family reunion, say at beautiful Brugge or historic Kortrijk in West Flanders, Belgium? If interested, please advise by e-mail - deboo@pacificcoast.net - RFD
